"Custom" volunteer registration fields

 I was told that the volunteer form was truly customizable, but I do not like that there are some fields that the system is making required when they do not need to be. For example, we do not allow our volunteers to choose the role that they are in - our VBS directors make that determination, but on the volunteer form you force that selection to be made. Is there anything we can do to change this??
